The 54th Annual National Convention of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will be suspending their activities today at approximately 1:00 p.m. in response to the impending tropical storm. The Sorority had convened approximately 15,000 members on Thursday, and had activities planned through Sunday. The Convention Center staff had been in regular consultation with the organizers of the Convention throughout the development of the storm.

The New Orleans Police Department and Louisiana State Police will implement a traffic plan for the upcoming Essence Festival. Events will be held in the Convention Center from 9:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. starting Friday, July 5 through Sunday, July 7. Heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic is expected for the event.

The newly constructed roadway for Convention Center Boulevard, from Julia Street to the river bound Calliope Street will be open on June 1. In that phase, construction will be concentrated on the park side of the project. Motorists can expect intermittent closures for the positioning of heavy equipment. Dedicated cross-walks for pedestrians will continue to have crossing officers during heavy use.
The new roadway will feature one lane in each direction with a cobblestone safety strip dividing the two lanes.
