Tourism drives the economy of south Louisiana and no other single entity produces more new dollars and tax revenues for our region than the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. With 3 million square feet along the New Orleans river front, today’s Convention Center is at the heart and soul of our local economy, hosting more than 1 million visitors annually from all corners of the world and producing approximately $170 million in taxes for city and state governments each year.
For many visitors, the Convention Center is their first “port of call” in the Crescent City, and the first opportunity for Louisiana’s hospitality community to put its best foot forward and begin to shape the visitor’s unique and memorable Louisiana experience. By its very nature and mission, it also brings the world’s industry leaders to Louisiana to experience the latest developments in every subject imaginable.
From its early days following the 1984 World’s Fair, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center has operated through revenues generated by out of town visitors. The Center has met its obligations to expand and meet growing demand by its own bonding capacity, bringing over $52 billion of new spending to the state’s economy while continually operating as a tax dollar producing publicly owned convention destination and employer of choice.
And when city and state policy makers and elected officials seek to attract world class sports and entertainment events such as the Super Bowl, NCAA sports championships, national political conventions, and more, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is a central element of the city and state presentations, adding credibility, professionalism and reputation to their proposals.

A Revenue Producer For All of Louisiana
Unique among convention centers around the United States, and among publicly owned facilities in Louisiana, the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is a revenue generating state owned entity that gets no direct financial or operational assistance from the City of New Orleans.
Yet, the Convention Center generates more than $170 million annually for City and State treasuries that directly helps fund important government services and agencies including the Orleans Parish School Board and Regional Transit Authority.
Excellence in All Things At All Times
The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s award winning SPICE Customer Service Program was first implemented in 2009 to help train and mentor employees as active and effective ambassadors of the city and Convention Center. SPICE stands for:
S – Serve with flexibility and a sense of urgency;
P – Perform with pride and passion;
I – Identify issues and provide solutions;
C – Convey a positive attitude;
E – Exceed expectations always.
All 500 full-time and part-time employees attend regular training on these five Customer Service Standards that comprise the guiding philosophy of the program and the daily operations of the Convention Center. These standards are reinforced during a daily “SPICE Rack” meeting during which employees are encouraged to recognize fellow employees for exceptional acts of service. The Convention Center also holds motivational, educational and teambuilding events for employees during the year, to reinforce the program and build the sense of comradery and mission that have made the Convention an employer and destination of choice.

Our Vision For Revitalizing the Convention Center District and Upriver New Orleans
In 2014, the managing Authority of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center initiated plans for a visionary approach to revitalizing the Convention Center District and further expanding the city’s tourism base outside the traditional French Quarter, Warehouse District and Magazine Street corridors.
The Authority’s Vision Plan encompasses major traffic and aesthetic improvements to Convention Center Boulevard to enhance the experiences of the over 1 million annual cruise passengers and residents alike, driving even more commerce and employment opportunities to the area. In keeping with the Convention Center’s mission and commitment to sound financial management, no new taxes or reallocation of existing tax dollars will be needed to undertake this transformative $1 billion development. Plans include a world class 1200 room hotel, new apartments and condominiums to help satisfy the city’s growing demand for housing, a pedestrian park, 300,000 square feet of new shopping and dining opportunities not available elsewhere in the city, a riverfront entertainment and arts complex, and vastly improved transportation experience that ensures better safety for pedestrians and smoother traffic patterns for residents coming to and from the city in the Warehouse District and from Uptown and beyond.
This entire $1 billion project will be undertaken exclusively with private investment capital and the Convention Center’s own bonding capacity and revenues.
