Advisory: Parts of New Convention Center Boulevard Roadway to Open

Posted on

The newly constructed roadway for Convention Center Boulevard, from Julia Street to the river bound Calliope Street will be open on June 1.  In that phase, construction will be concentrated on the park side of the project. Motorists can expect intermittent closures for the positioning of heavy equipment. Dedicated cross-walks for pedestrians will continue to have crossing officers during heavy use.

The new roadway will feature one lane in each direction with a cobblestone safety strip dividing the two lanes.

Work on the roadway is part of a $557 million improvement plan that includes converting the linear half of Convention Center Boulevard into a lushly landscaped public park to be completed in the fall of 2020.  The park will include public art, water features, and a variety of types of locations to rest and relax.

The next phase of the project to be completed will the Transportation Center located under the Crescent City Connection between the two Calliope Streets.  The Transportation Center will be where all shuttles, taxis and ride-shares operate from, reducing the traffic on the Boulevard when completed.
