The parade commenced at 9 a.m at the Royal Sonesta, 300 Bourbon St. Led by Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and the New Orleans Conventions and Visitors Bureau (CVB), MCCNO staff marched with hundreds of hospitality industry workers, the Warren Easton Charter High School marching band, stilt walkers, and mini-float riders through the French Quarter to Tableau at Le Petit Theatre, 616 S. Peters St.

The 256^th IBCT honored three dedicated MCCNO staff members for their “meritorious service and support to the Louisiana National Guard during Hurricane Isaac Operations.” Director of Facility Operations Danny Vincens and Vice President of Operations Bryan Hayden were awarded Distinguished Louisiana Civilian Service Medals; MCCNO President Bob Johnson received the Minuteman Award.

“On behalf of the entire brigade, thank you for what you’ve done for our organization,” 256^th Commander, Col. Keith Waddell said as he presented the honors. “During Hurricane Isaac operations, the Convention Center allowed us to focus on saving lives.”

Waddell was referring to the wake of Hurricane Isaac, during which National Guard Troops of the 256^th set up an operations center at the MCCNO to prepare for search-and-rescue missions, clearing streets of debris, and assisting local law enforcement agencies. Maj. Marc Prymek, 199^th Brigade Support Battalion executive officer, recommended Vincens and Hayden for Distinguished Louisiana Civilian Service Medals, and Johnson for the Minuteman Award after Hurricane Isaac operations suspended.

“Hayden, without hesitation or reservation, planned for and opened the MCCNO facility to the Louisiana National Guard,” Pymek said. He commended Hayden’s decision to “cease rental of space to commercial tenants in order to prepare the Convention Center for the arrival of Soldiers and Airmen.  The MCCNO provided space for two weeks during Hurricane Isaac operations that would have retailed for more than $200,000, which allowed Airmen and Soldiers to focus on mission execution evacuating and protecting citizens.”

The MCCNO allocated more than 50,000 square feet of meeting space to the 199^th Brigade during Hurricane Isaac Operations. “Hayden ensured his support staff supplied all requirements to the 256^th Infantry. Staff not only provided meeting rooms with tables and chairs, but also provided network capabilities and electrical drops with back-up generators ensuring continuity of military operations as the storm made landfall,” Prymek described.

Prymek called Vincenz, who was the operational point of contact at the Convention Center, “instrumental in preparations of the MCCNO for the arrival of soldiers and airmen.” He noted that Vincens “treated every single request for support or resource, no matter how small or large, that crossed his path as a priority. He went above and beyond the initial requirement of support to the Louisiana National Guard.”

The Louisiana National Guardsmen went on to honor Johnson and the entire MCCNO staff by awarding the prestigious Minuteman Award, which recognizes exceptional achievement, a patriotic act, highly distinguished service or an outstanding contribution to a military organization, community, state, nation, and to the National Guard. Prymek recommended Johnson for this award after witnessing his “leadership and direction in support of the Louisiana National Guard during the Hurricane Isaac Operations.”

The award also honored “each MCCNO employee and staff member, from electricians and plumbers to security and network technicians, who were all instrumental in the overall success of the Louisiana National Guard,” Prymek added.

“The dedication and support of these men directly contributed to allowing soldiers and airmen to focus on saving lives through evacuation and rescue, preserving or restoring civil order, maintaining and re-establishing communications, and ensuring continuity of operations and government for our neighbors, families, and citizens of Louisiana,” Prymek said of the three honorees. “Their exceptional performance and generosity is a great credit to the city of New Orleans, the state of Louisiana, and the Louisiana National Guard.”

“On behalf of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center staff and board, we appreciate being able to be of support to the Louisiana National Guard, which in turn is vital to the resiliency of New Orleans,” Johnson said in closing.
